About the Songs

RHB: This is an old Irish fiddle tune called Red Haired Boy, or the Little Beggarman. It’s a great timeless melody and a tune I’ve played in several flatpick contests through the years. This is a fun version to play, with a Bo Diddley groove backing it up.

Cajun Moon: Over the years I’ve played a lot of JJ Cale tunes. They are always subtle in their simplicity. When I moved to NM I would go through an exercise where I would try to remember songs I had played in previous bands without referencing the original version. That way I could draw on more recent musical influences rather than copy the same old thing.

Dig the Stars: This is a song I put together with my old friend Chris Plourde. We used to write and record a whole lot during our college days. This has always been my favorite and meant the most to me personally. I’ve added and subtracted to it over the years and I dedicate it to my youngest sister who came to live in New Mexico for a spell. We went on a camping trip to the Gile National Forest and looked at every star in the sky.

Shady Lady: This one is based on the melody of Shady Grove. It just got so far away from the original that it needed a new spin on the title. I can’t say I’ve ever heard an Appalachian fiddle tune played in 7/8 time.

Ghost of New Orleans: I still have the page the original lyrics were scawled out onto with the handwritten note: ‘Hey, Gregg, Whaddya think?’ The words were written by Coy King, who I played with in a band called Chitlin Circuit in Albuquerque back in the late 90’s. For a while we were acoustic guitar and upright bass, and added a mandolin later on. This group really allowed be to draw out the material I had played back east in the early 90’s.

Louis Collins: Probably the most well-loved song by Mississippi John Hurt. I first heard his music while listening to Doc Watson. Poor Louis shouldn’t have taken his gun to town. The music feels like a requiem to me, which invites a fresh start.
